For the remainder of his life, Patton would highlight the Rhine crossing and the Palatine campaign as two of his greatest accomplishments. Despite this triumph, he was already anticipating an uncomfortable peace with the Soviets and was still unsure of the fate of his son-in-law Lieutenant Colonel John Waters. On March 13, prior to the victorious Rhine crossing, he took the unusual step of writing General George Marshall, requesting a transfer to a combat command in the Pacific. In the weeks that followed, he began to write with growing fatalism that this would be “my last war.”138 This sense that the war was ending and with it his opportunity to win glory appears to have been the motivation to take enormous risks in the coming weeks that would ultimately jeopardize his place in history. For the moment, he savored the opportunity to build his reputation as a bold and decisive fighter guided by a supernatural sense of history.
